While travelling from Llanberis to Betws-y-Coed in the heart of Eryri / Snowdonia National Park – to enjoy another legendary pizza at The Hanging Pizzeria I made a brief stop along the Pen y Pass road to explore Afon Nant Peris. A mountain river that flows down from Pen y Pass through a dramatic Welsh landscape.
After spending some time following the river, I discovered a beautiful and familiar scene: a small cascade framed by a lone tree, with an impressive Snowdonia mountain backdrop rising behind it. I recognised the location from D. Giff Gallery, and it was a real pleasure to finally photograph it myself.
I captured the scene in both landscape and portrait orientations, making the most of the flowing water and surrounding terrain. Back home, I’ve experimented with several Lightroom edits, adjusting tones and contrast to reflect the mood of the location. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the final results—which edit or orientation do you prefer?

Parking at Pen-Y-Pass
There are several free lay-bys along the Pen y Pass road, offering convenient access to the surrounding rivers and walking routes. However, these parking spots fill up quickly, especially during weekends and peak seasons. Some lay-bys are also in poor condition and may only be suitable for 4×4 vehicles, so caution is advised.
Getting There
Pen y Pass is located just outside Llanberis, within Snowdonia National Park, North Wales. It’s easily accessible by car and is a popular starting point for photographers, walkers, and hikers exploring the area. Arriving early is recommended due to limited parking and high visitor numbers.
