Elan Valley, Mid Wales – Dams, Landscapes & Scenic Beauty

If you’re craving fresh air, wide open views, and a real sense of calm, the Elan Valley is one of those places that never disappoints. Hidden away in mid-Wales near the town of Rhayader, it’s a beautiful mix of rolling hills, peaceful reservoirs, and impressive stone dams — and it’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and take it all in.

The valley’s famous dams were built in the early 1900s to provide water for Birmingham, more than 80 miles away. Over a century later, they’re still standing strong and looking just as impressive. Craig Goch and Garreg Ddu are two of the most well-known, and seeing them up close really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship that went into them. Built from stone, they blend effortlessly into the surrounding landscape, sitting quietly among the hills rather than overpowering them.

One of the loveliest things about the Elan Valley is how peaceful it feels. Early mornings often bring soft light and gentle mist drifting over the water, while later in the day you might catch warm golden light or moody clouds rolling in. It’s no surprise photographers like myself love it here, but even if you’re just out for a stroll, the scenery alone is more than enough to impress.

Whether you’re visiting for a gentle walk, a bike ride, a picnic, or simply some quiet time away from busy life, the Elan Valley has a wonderfully unspoilt feel that’s hard to beat.

The Elan Valley Visitor Centre is a great place to start your visit. You’ll find plenty of useful information about the area’s history and wildlife, along with a café, toilets, gift shop, cycle hire, an adventure playground for children, and lots of parking — everything you need for a relaxed day out.

How to Get to Elan Valley

Reaching the Elan Valley is easy by car. From the crossroads in Rhayader, follow the B4518, which is clearly signposted for the Elan Valley. After about three miles, you’ll arrive at the entrance to the valley and the Visitor Centre.
